Staff Sponsorship 2009 Appeal

Friday, 3 April 2009

Our mission is to provide ophthalmic care of the highest quality and relevance to the people of Gaza, East Jerusalem and the West Bank, irrespective of ethnicity, religion, social class or ability to pay. We are the only Ophthalmic charity provider to the Palestinian people, where they can access essential health care free of charge.

In order to provide the level of care required in this remarkable and troubled region, we are reliant on our 216 strong team of professional and dedicated staff - all of whom strive to ensure that the best possible attention is given to those who need it most. In 2008 we were able to improve eyesight and therefore provide a better quality of life to 94,426 men, women and children in the Occupied Territories.

Staff costs - from ancillary staff to our nurses and doctors – make up approximately 60% of our overall charity expenditure. In 2009 this will come to £3,827,800 and we must find funding to cover this.

Raising funds specifically for our staff brings them closer to our supporters, who are directly championing those performing the vital humanitarian services that our charity provides.

In 2009, supporters can assist us by either giving a one off donation towards our General Staff Fund or those able to can commit to our Staff Sponsorship Scheme.

General Staff Fund

We aim to raise a minimum of £100,000 in 2009 to enable us to establish a General Staff Fund. This fund can then be used to cover vital staff costs as and when required. This is of particular importance during the current bleak economic crisis when there is global financial uncertainty. Those who donate to this fund will receive an annual update on the disbursement of the money and the staff involved. All donations, large or small, are important.

Staff Sponsorship Scheme

Committing to the funding of a specific staff post is a wonderful way to support the work of our charity and to get to know some of the staff personally. We ask that those able to consider this option give a three year commitment that will be reviewed on an annual basis.

We will provide regular updates on the staff member whose post has been funded. Long-term staff sponsorship makes a difference to the lives and morale of our staff and also their extended families.
