The Lord Vestey KCVO, Patron

The Lord Vestey is the Patron of the Hospital.  He is former Lord Prior of the Order of St John. He is Chairman of The Vestey Group and Master of the Horse to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Professor Mark Compton AM GCStJ, Lord Prior

Mark is an experienced Non-Executive Director and CEO, predominantly in healthcare and life sciences organisations including the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) listed companies. He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors; Fellow Australasian College of Health Services Management; Fellow Australian Institute of Management and Fellow of the Royal Society (NSW). Mark is Adjunct Professor in management at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia and spent 8 years on the board of Macquarie University Private Hospital, integral to establishing MQ Health,  Australia’s first academic health sciences centre.

Mark is Chairman and Non-Executive Director of Sonic Healthcare Limited (ASX: SHL), a global medical diagnostics and healthcare organisation.  He is also a non-executive director on the board of Next Science Limited a medical technology company and Chairman of St Luke’s Care a not for profit health and aged care organisation.

Mark is an active volunteer firefighter with the NSW Rural Fire Service in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia. He has volunteered with St John Ambulance for over 45 years.

Sir Andrew Cash OBE, Chairman of the Board

Sir Andrew joined the NHS as a fast track graduate management trainee and has been a chief executive for more than 20 years. He has worked at local, regional and national level. He has worked by invite at the Department of Health Whitehall on a number of occasions. He is a visiting Professor in Leadership Development at the Universities of York and Sheffield. He is the Vice Chair of the NHS Confederation and Chair of the NHS Employers Policy Board.

Sir Andrew has been Chief Executive of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust since its inception in July 2004 until July 2018. He joined the SJEHG Board as Chairman in September 2018.

Mr David H Verity, MD, MA (Oxon), BM BCh, FRCOphth, OStJ, Hospitaller

David Verity is a consultant ophthalmologist and international ophthalmic trainer. He trained at Oxford University and St Thomas’ Hospital and advanced subspecialty training in oculoplastics at Moorfields Eye Hospital, where he was appointed to the Consultant Staff in 2004, taking on the role of Service Director in 2014.

He is a Full Member of the British Oculoplastic Surgery Society (immediate past Treasurer), Treasurer of the European Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ESOPRS), Full Member of the International Society of Ocular Oncology (ISOO), and a surgical trainer on cadaveric courses in the UK, and for the European School for Advanced Studies in Ophthalmology (ESASO) and the Singapore National Eye Centre.

Mr Verity visited Jerusalem as a medical student in 1985, and for several subsequent visits. His collaborative work on the genetics of Silk Road Disease, a condition common in the oPt, lead to 23 publications in peer-reviewed international genetics journals. In he was 2000 was awarded the Iris Fund millennial prize for research into the causes of blindness. In 2009, he was elected to the Orbital Society, in 2010 became Editor-in Chief of the journal ORBIT, and in 2016 became oculoplastic section Editor for the Journal of Ophthalmic and Vision Research.

Mr Verity joined the SJEHG Board in 2016 and is Clinical Governance lead as well as Hospitaller. He is also co-founder and Chair of the St John Ophthalmic Association (SOA). As Hospitaller, Mr Verity looks forward to strengthening the ties between clinicians across the world, our Priories and supporters, and the St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group.

Nicholas Goulding BSc FCA CTA (Fellow) ATT, OStJ, Treasurer

Nicholas Goulding is SJEHG’s Treasurer and Secretary. He is a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Adviser and is a former partner with KPMG LLP. He is Honorary Treasurer of The HM Tower of London Chapels Royal Foundation, The Honourable Company of Air Pilots, St Lawrence with St Swithun Winchester and a Governor of Lord Wandsworth College.

Nicholas Goulding

Dr Maged Abu-Ramadan MD FRCSEd OStJ

Dr Abu Ramadan is a resident of Gaza, a Senior Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, and the Founder and President of the Palestinian Ophthalmological Society. In 2005 he was made mayor of Gaza. He is the Treasurer of MEACO, and the Chairman of Coastal Municipalities Water Utility (CMWU). Previously, he was the Palestinian Authority Director General of Hospitals General Administration and the Director General of the International Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Health.

Dr Anne L. Coleman, MD, PhD, OStJ

Dr Anne L. Coleman, MD, PhD is the Fran and Ray Stark Professor of Ophthalmology in the Stein Eye Institute of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA as well as Professor of Epidemiology in the UCLA School of Public Health. She is Vice-Chair for Academic Affairs for the Department of Ophthalmology and Director of the SEI Center for Community Outreach and Policy, overseeing both the UCLA Mobile Eye Clinic and the UCLA Center for Eye Epidemiology. Dr. Coleman received her medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia, completed her fellowship training in glaucoma at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University, and received a PhD in Epidemiology from UCLA.

Dr. Coleman is also actively involved in national outreach programs in ophthalmology, as the Chair of a 14-member committee of eye health experts overseeing National Eye Health Educational Program’s education programs, and as the Secretary of Quality of Care and Director of the H. Dunbar Hoskins Center for Quality of Care, American Academy of Ophthalmology, developing patient-centered guidelines and performing comparative effectiveness research. She is a former at-large member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Board of Trustees, president of Women in Ophthalmology, and recipient of the Academy’s Senior Achievement Award and Secretariat Award. She is currently a member of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Ophthalmic Devices Panel, the American Ophthalmological Society Council, and the Board of Trustees of Helen Keller International. Since 2003, she has served as Executive Editor of Glaucoma for the American Journal of Ophthalmology.

Jamie Ingham Clark, CStJ, FCA

Having trained as a chartered accountant with what is now Ernst and Young  Jamie’s career developed within the London Insurance Market where he has had many years Board experience both as Finance and more recently, Compliance Director. The regulated nature of the Insurance Market led him to specialise in corporate governance in regulated businesses. In 2013 he became an elected member of the City of London Corporation, the City’s local government body and is currently the Deputy for the Ward of Billingsgate. Amongst other committees, Jamie is the Deputy Chairman of its Finance Committee with its responsibility for the City finances. Jamie has also been a member of the Order of St John Ceremonial Staff since 1981, where he is currently Sword Bearer and is a Liveryman of the Clothworkers’ Company.

Susan Dingwall OStJ

Susan Dingwall is a partner of the international law firm, Norton Rose Fulbright LLP, specialising in insurance and risk issues. Ms Dingwall leads the firm’s award-winning Islamic insurance practice and is a recognised expert in her field by Chambers, Legal 500, Islamic Finance News’ Leading Lawyers, Euromoney’s Guide to The World’s Leading Women in Business Law and Euromoney’s Expert Guides – Insurance & Reinsurance.

Susan Dingwall

Philip Hall OBE

Mr Hall has been British Consul General in Jerusalem since August 2017. Before that he led the Spending Review at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. From 2012-2015 he headed FCO’s Counter Proliferation Department, leading the UK Government’s work to prevent the spread of chemical, biological and nuclear weapons. He was Defence Counsellor in the UK Delegation to NATO from 2008-12. Most of his career has been on European and Middle Eastern issues, in FCO, the Cabinet Office and the Treasury. He headed the FCO’s Middle East Peace Process Section from 1999-2001. He is a Solicitor, completed postgraduate studies in European law and integration in Germany, and has a Masters in Public Policy from the London School of Economics.

John Macaskill OStJ

John Macaskill is a Founding Partner and Managing Director of Groton Partners, a Private Equity firm based in New York. Mr Macaskill joined Groton Partners in March 2005 and focuses his efforts on alternative investments, including private equity. Mr Macaskill is a General Partner in a number of private equity and real estate funds and has spent the last forty years in the financial services industry in New York and London. He serves as a Director to the Edinburgh International Festival American board, Provista Diagnostics, is treasurer of Meadowbrook Golf Club and he is a member (retired) of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland, and a Chapter Member of the Priory in the United States of the Order of St John. He joined the Board in January 2018.

Guy Morton is a solicitor and was until his retirement in 2014 a partner in Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP, with a practice specialising in banking and financial law and the regulation of financial markets. He was Senior Partner of the firm from 2006 to 2010. He has served on European Commission consultative groups relating to financial law reform and has represented the United Kingdom in relation to international law reform initiatives at the Hague Conference on Private International Law and UNIDROIT.

Nicki Shaw is Chief Executive of Princess Alice Hospice. She previously worked at the British Heart Foundation, latterly as Programme Director for Prevention and Care. Her career has spanned the commercial, regulatory and voluntary sectors. She has participated in a number of National forums including the Palliative Care Funding Review and the DH Advisory Group on Health at Work.

Herbert von Bose

Herbert von Bose completed his studies in law from the Universities Bonn, Geneva and Heidelberg in 1975. He was an assistant at the law faculty of the University of Montpellier before joining the Ministry of Justice in Baden Württemberg, Germany in 1976. From 1979 to 1983 he practiced as a lawyer in Mannheim and Heidelberg. In 1983, he started working for the European Commission in Brussels. Up to 1995 he worked in different Directorates General, Social affairs, Energy and Enterprise. In 1996 he joined the Directorate General for Research and became Head of Unit for “Aeronautics, Space, Automotive, Rail and Maritime”. From 2004 to 2007, he was Head of Unit for “Security Research and Development”.

From September 2007 to December 2013, he was Director for “Industrial Technologies” in DG Research and Innovation. Herbert von Bose joined the Johanniterorden in 1984 and in 1995 he was nominated Rechtsritter. From 2002 to 2012 he was the chairman of the Brussels Johanniter Group (Subkommende). Since June 2014 he has been governing Commander of the Balley.

Dr Ahmad Ma’ali CStJ PhD MPH BSN PGCE ENB Joint CEO for Clinical Services. Director of Nursing and Allied Health Professions

Dr Ahmad Ma’ali joined SJEHG in 1990 as a student nurse, cementing his education at Al Quds University, Greenwich University and Moorfields Eye Hospital, as well as being awarded a PhD from De Montfort University – Leicester in 2017. He became Head of our School of Nursing in 2001 and in 2009 became our first Palestinian Nursing Director. He was appointed Joint CEO in October 2017.

Peter Khoury joined SJEHG as Deputy Financial Controller in 2008, and became Financial Controller in 2014. He gained his financial qualifications at North Park University in Chicago where he earned the prestigious ‘Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities’ award for outstanding academic achievement. Peter was an auditor for KPMG, and was Accounts Manager at The Lutheran World Federation / Augusta Victoria Hospital. Peter is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, The Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants, and the Arab Society of Certified Accountants. He was appointed Joint CEO in October 2017.
